The baby butterfly is from an egg. The egg is the size of a pinhead. The larva will chew its way out of the egg. The hatched larva eats its eggshell and the leaves of the host-plant, the wild cherry. The larva spins a silk chrysalis made from silk glands. Within a few hours after the adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis the butterfly is ready to fly start the life cycle all over again. |
The butterfly lives mostly in woodlands and forest edges. During the Winter During the winter the butterflies hibernate. |
The butterflies greatest threats are pesticides sprayed on plants to kill insects that eat the plants and changes to their environment and their forest habitat. Lifespan The butterflies live 4-5 days after becoming an adult. |
