The Lincolns: A Pageant
By Howard Taylor
Robert Lincoln

Good afternoon. I am Robert Todd Lincoln. I am happy to see all of you, and would like to tell you a little bit about me.
I was born in 1843. I am the first child of my parents, Abraham and Mary Lincoln. Being the oldest, I have to deal with 3 much younger brothers. Actually I enjoy being around them. They are very lively and imaginative.
I was named for my mother’s father, who lived in Lexington, Kentucky. I was born in a funny place—the Globe Tavern in Springfield. We lived in a room in the tavern, until we moved into a small house on 4th street. Later, my parents purchased this house from Dr. Charles Dresser, the Episcopal minister.
This house got a second story because of so many boys in the family. We just didn’t have room for all of us. I go to the Estabrook Academy in Springfield. I am getting good at writing and other studies. I hope to be a good lawyer as Father.
My father is so smart, and didn’t get to go to college. He wants me to go to college, and both my parents are now helping me find a college out east. There is a new college called Harvard. Maybe I can go there.
I play with my brothers quite often, read books to them, and help care for them when I’m at home. We have a lot of fun playing, and including Fido our pet dog.
Thanks for dropping in.
