MICRO-BIOLOGY LEARNING ACTIVITY

Welcome to the world of tiny things.  We know they are there when we get sick with a cold or the flu.  We know they were there when we eat cheese and other great foods we like.  We know they are there when we see the great sea animals that eat only them.  We need the MICROSCOPE  to "observe" them.  This activity is to learn about micro-organisms, the different types, and the device we use to see them:  the Microscope.   Have fun in this activity.

YOUR JOBS:

PART ONE:  STUDYING MICROBES:  TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Go to Biology4Kids: Microbes as well as Microbus (about microscopes) and use their information to answer these questions:

1.  List the two main types of MICROSCOPES, and next to each category, briefly describe the difference between the two. (Click Here)

2.  Light Microscopes:   How powerful can they be?                                  What type of microbes can you see with this type of microscope?                                      What type cannot be seen?                         Why can't it be seen?

(

3.  Electron Microscopes:  How does this type differ from the light microscope?

How does the electron microscope work?

What are the three types of electron microscopes?

Describe some special features of the three types of electron microscopes.

4.  What is "culture equipment?"   (Click Here)

Describe Petri Plates and Flasks.

5.  What is culture "MEDIA?"    (Click Here)

PART TWO:  LEARNING ABOUT MICRO-ORGANISMS

Answer these questions:

Questions:
1.  What is a microbe? (Click Here)

2.  What is a bacteria, and are all bacteria bad?  ?(Click Here)

3.  What microbe goes way back to the Precambrian age?  (Click Here)

4.  What is the difference between a virus and a bacterium?  (Click Here)

5.  List and describe the six main types of microbes.  (Click Here)

6.  Be able to name at least three places microbes live.  Are there any places they might not live?     (Click Here)

7.  Using the handy microbe historical timeline, select a decade (ten-year period), and make your own illustrated time-line with your computer (WORD), images and description of what happened during the decade.  (Click Here)
