6th Grade:

INTRODUCTION:
Students will use
computers and printer to develop a Lincoln Notebook (collection) of things
they find about the President. In the notebook will be included the Lincoln
Handbook to be filled out, a scrapbook with pictures of a topic they find
particularly interesting of their own choice. They will be allowed to print
on the new laser printer from websites.
In addition, each
student will be encouraged to create a web page using either Frontpage,
Dreamweaver, Netscape Composer, WORD or Power Point. They will be saved as
web page. Successful pages will be posted on the Internet. A limit will be
placed on photos or images to be used on these pages.
A print copy of each
web page will be included in their notebooks.
To coincide with their
Lincoln studies, all three classes will go on a field trip to view actually
historical sites concerning Lincoln, his family and of course the trip to
Springfield.
The project will end at
the end of May. Due to many half-days and other events, it has to be extended
to this long.
OBJECTIVES:
-
A
general understanding of Illinois’ greatest citizen will be attained
by studying primary sources, reading, viewing, and creating a notebook
collection of information.
-
Students will finish
up with a Lincoln notebook, a Power Point or WORD web page on Lincoln
-
Field trips will be
conducted so students can view primary historical sites and get a feel of
Abe’s connection to Illinois and Charleston.
-
A rubric will be
completed by the teacher on each student’s success in this project. A
Lincoln Certificate will be issued to each student that finishes the
project. Click Here for a sample certificate
of accomplishment.
PROCEDURES FOR
CONDUCTING THE ACTIVITY:
-
Students will be
allowed to work solo or with a partner. No more than two in a group. Each
student, though, will have to produce his/her own notebook.
-
Internet sites will
be used, as pre-selected by Mr. Taylor on hot lists.
-
We will print all
documents on the new laser printer, including handouts, images, WORD
documents, and copies of Power Points and web pages.
-
A “Student Job” form
will be available on the assignment table in t. room, with each form clearly
labeled. Students will keep all papers, etc. in their storage folder or
portfolio. This will be their notebook container, unless new ones are
provided by the student.
-
We will be limited in
amount of work time, so all jobs will be of a short-term basis, and
accomplishable in one classroom period of time.
-
We will look at
actual on-line Lincoln writings and images.
-
The rubric for
assessment will be completed for each student, and the certificate of
completion will be given out before school ends.
