(TO BE USED WITH THE LINCOLN'S JOURNEY INTO ILLINOIS, 1830, LEARNING ACTIVITY)

OBJECTIVE:
    To culminate our project of studying the Lincolns, Halls, and Hanks move into Illinois, 1830, by creating a classroom mural of the trip and the final destinations of the three families into Coles County.

DIRECTIONS:
    Classes will be divided into groups of 2-3. Each group will be given a component to do on the class mural. These components are:
1. The Lincoln family     2. The Hanks family   3. The Hall family

2. Each family group will be researched, including: names and ages; oets; their cabin in Spencer County, Indiana; wagon (built over the winter and early spring of 1829-30; belongings; oxen or horses, The group will make a color/drawing (small version) of the Indian cabin with trees, rail fences, and the pioneer people and children. Details may be added to make the Indiana home scene colorful and rich in detail   Included will be art instruction in the drawing of trees, use of perspective on log cabins, fences and depiction of foreground/background..

3. Each family group will then draw and color the wagon, oxen, horses, other livestalk taken on the journey. In addition a new set of action drawings of the family members will be needed to drive the wagon, walk along side it, or ride in the wagon.

4. Each family group will then draw and color their wagon crossing the Wabash River at Vincennes, Indiana. Actually, the same wagon as depicted in step two could be traced, colored and used, unless a group member is comfortable with making a new one for each scene. The river will be drawn on the mural by a selected student/artist with technical advice from the teacher.

5. A new mural section will be needed now to depict the Illinois landscape of prairie grass, various animals, and "big sky." The three wagons could be placed in a column leading through this new area for the three families.

5. A scene of the three family-group will be depicted visiting with the Sawyers inside Coles County.

6. The three family group will now move into Decatur, Illinois, and build cabins next to the Sangamon River. A bad winter could be depicted on the cabins in this part of the mural.

7. The mural will now show a young Abraham Lincoln going by raft to New Salem. Thomas and the others will take the invite to move back into Coles County, where the mural will show Goosenest Farm (now Lincoln Log Cabin Historical Site) where Thomas and Sarah would settle, as well as a scene of New Salem on the Sangamon River.

8. The mural will have labels describing each part of this journey. Each family member, on the journey, will be named. A "group family portrait" would be a good way to depict each of the families.

9. The mural will be hung in the hallway of the school for all to see.

10. The mural will be converted into an online picture story in Photo Story 3, and posted on the Lincoln website at http://www.alincolnlearning.us.
