. . . Flags of the U.S.--Student Activity
A part of the "Stars and Stripes" History On-Line Learning Activity by Howard Taylor

What do the Stars Mean?

The flag has gained many new stars since the first one of 1777, with a total of 13.  There were other flags before and during the Revolution, but the official "first" flag was the 1777 version.  Each star would represent a state in the Union.  This tradition continues until present day.

Your job is to:

1.  Find the flag that was used when Abraham Lincoln was President (1861-65).  How many stars did it have?

2. List the states in the U.S. at the time of Lincoln .  Remember there was a Civil War ongoing, with some states seceding.  President Lincoln never removed their stars.  You will have to find out when each state became a state to determine which states were represented with a star on the Lincoln flag.

. . . Use "Stately Knowledge"
to find out when each state became a state

3.  Print a State Regions map and set of questions from Enchanted Learning States Maps Site.
You can also use
Infoplease Online Almanac for more answers.
4.  Answer the questions and color your map.
5.  We will make a state trivia game from your answers.
6.  Further directions will be given by the teacher.

Use this table borrowed from the U.S. Flags.org website
to find out when each flag was introduced
(This website will provide links to all the state flags, plus all the historical U.S. flags)
