Introduction:
- This
learning activity was created with the intention of presenting a very nice
historical monument/memorial remembering the great Civil War of 1861-1865.
This activity does tell of the turn of the century time in Georgia, and many
other states, including Indiana and others where the Ku Klux Klan was organizing
to try to keep bigotry and racism alive and well after the Civil War.
The Klan was not actually a Southern invention, but started in the Northern
state of Indiana.
- Stone
Mountain, near Atlanta, Georgia, has early visits from the Klan, but has since
many decades ago turned into a beautiful park and memorial.
Gutzon Borglum,
famed Mt. Rushmore sculptor, was the original designer and initial carver
of Stone Mountain Memorial, but would be replaced by Augustus Lukeman.
In
this online activity, students will:
- learn
the origin of Stone Mountain Memorial, the Klan connection in the early 20th
Century, and what has happened to Stone Mountain since its completion in
1964.
- learn
about great generals and battles of the Civil War.
- be
asked to create Power Points, scrapbooks, and even a Stone Mountain History
Book.
- be
asked to learn about the type of rock the mountain is composed of, and a
science teacher could even use this activity to study geology, especially
the giant rock called Stone Mountain.
- learn
about Georgia and Atlanta History.
. . .
The Student Activity Page will provide the teacher with an outline of what's
expected of the students. This would be an excellent small-group activity
utilizing classroom or lab computers.
. . .
Have fun learning about this little bit of Southern History.
