A special History On-Line Activity will be completed which includes the study of the flag's history, how stars are added and the actual creation of a new U.S. state (geographical setting, name and origin of name,  flag, and symbols).  The culmination will be the design of a 51 star flag (a little math here)

This activity will involve writing and illustrating, as well as a study of the Civil War.  Surviving Andrew's Raiders (The Great Locomotive Chase) were awarded the first Congressional Medals of Honor.  Students will also learn about 19th Century steam locomotives and a myriad of other interesting facts, including the "Burning of Atlanta."  Small groups will work on this History On-Line Activity.  [This activity will be completed again in another quarter]

This activity will involve old time Charleston & National radio history, writing, dramatics, public speaking and even business management skills.  An actual (Old Time) radio station will be planned, programs produced, advertising sold and spots written, as well as news, sports, weather and entertainment.  All final products will be recorded on cassette tapes (audio only).  This will be a whole group cooperative project. 14.  The Old National Trail Learning Activity, including Pioneer Life on the Trail

More details will be provided when we get closer to doing this unit.  We hope to learn about stage coach stops such as the newly restored Five Mile House, south of  Charleston.  The National Trail (U.S. Rte. 40) Marshall to Vandalia, will be celebrated.  It is now over 200 years old.

Students will have hands on and theoretical training in the use of the GPS device.  We will work on a project mapping parts of Charleston (within walking distance), as well as creating maps of all kinds.  In addition, we will connect this project with the U.S. Census Project #5.

Students will select one coral reef animal, research and write a report on it.  While doing research, will find a color picture that may be used to make your "stuffed" coral reef animal out of paper.  We will create a coral reef in our G.E. classroom with all our “puffy fish” and a beautiful mural background.   Special reports will be posted with the displays.

20.  A GARDENING PROJECT IN THE ROOM!

For Next Spring

Students will use Internet and book resources to plan the perfect outside gardent for the yard.  Many concepts and considerations will be researched including:  a) soil profile/nutrients; b) color scheme;  c) slope stabilization or erosion control; d) watering schedule; e) sun/shade needs;  f) bloom time; g) pest control;  and h) maintenance.  Students will compile lists of plants and materials necessary to grow them, and will present their gardens to the class through an illustration and a "garden-talk."        Directions will be coming soon---- Under Construction

22.  U.S. Presidential "Hail to the Chief Learning Activity

A U.S. History activity in which the student will learn about the office of President, will actually do two simulations involving getting elected, being the President, and other realistic processes.  In addition, the student will learn about the President's song, as well as doing a  "COMPARISON OF FIVE FORMER PRESIDENTS" to determine the greatest President of our history.

23.  Seven Wonders of the World Adventure Activity

In this adventure activity, the Student will choose the set of wonders of the world that they would like to learn about:  Natural, Ancient, Forgotten, and Modern.  After choosing the set of wonders, the student will then follow an online puzzle to find many answers, information and new clues to finally end up with the treasure at the end.
