Students will:
1.  Research Natural Disasters using Internet resources to learn how such things happen, where they happen, and how they affect people.
2.  Answer the higher level questions concerning a type of natural disaster.  The class will work either individually or in small groups of 2-4.
3.  Produce a Natural Disasters poster or brochure with information about the disaster, how to prepare for it, and to describe forecasting (warning) systems available.
4.  Become aware of the importance of pre-planning in their own homes for natural disasters that hit Central Illinois.

State Learning Standards in Science and Social Studies will be covered in this short-term activity (2 class periods)
Social Studies:
17.A.2a
  Compare the physical character­istics of places including soils, land forms, vegetation, wildlife, climate, natural hazards.
17.A.2b  Use maps and other geographic representations and instruments to gather information about people, places and environments.
Science:
11.A.2e
  Report and display the results of individual and group investigations.
11.B.2b  Develop a plan, design and procedure to address the problem identifying constraints (e.g., time, materials, technology).

Materials or resources needed:  Internet and the pre-made hotlist of Natural Disasters, plus Google Search when needed.   Paper, pencil, poster paper and student art boxes.


Use the Hotlist of Natural Disaster Thinkquest Sites and answer the questions about a disaster that you and/or your group choose to study.  Present the information in an informational poster or brochure.  Write your answers in sentence form on paper. 

Questions with Level of Difficulty by Bloom's Taxonomy:
1.  Describe the season or timing that the natural disaster might be most apt to occur (unless volcano or earthquake)  (Comprehension & Synthesis)

2.  Make a timeline to explain how the disaster "builds up" or happens, from beginning to final event.  (Evaluation)

3.  Describe how people can be warned of an impending natural disaster (forecasting). 

4.  Describe how people can be prepared for a possible disaster. (Synthesis)

5.  Name any agencies that can help in forecasting or aiding victims of such disasters.  How can they do what they do in forecasting and helping?

6.   List things people should have in a safe place in their home in case a disaster would strike.  Why are they important?  (Application & Evaluation)
