Meeting Elizabeth Todd Edwards

Go to Mr. Lincoln's White House to read about Elizabeth

Hello,
I am Elizabeth Todd Edwards.  I am Mary Todd Lincoln's sister.  We both used to live at Lexington, Kentucky.  My Mr. Edwards was from the north-- the territory of Illinois.  His father would be the territorial governor of Illinois.  He later would be a U.S. Senator and Governor of Illinois.  I got into Springfield society.  I would marry Ninian Wirt Edwards in 1832.  We moved to Springfield the next year.

My sister Frances moved to Springfield.  My sister, Mary moved to Springfield in 1839, to live with us.  My sister Mary, was clever and intelligent, and was popular in Springfield society.

My sister met the new young lawyer, Abraham Lincoln, in 1840, and it wasn't too long until they were engaged.

Stephen Douglas was also a friend of Mary's, but she chose the tall lawyer, Abraham to be her husband.

I promised my sister that I would always "help" her, even in the roughest of times.  With four boys, she needed help often.
