SENATOR PAUL GRAHAM TELEGRAM TO TELL OF PASSAGE OF FIREMEN

AND POLICEMEN MINIMUM PAY LAW

Pay for firemen would be raised statewide. All cities •with a professional fire department and police department would have to meet a standard minimum wage. This would help the small CFD greatly. Senator Graham was a close friend of the Taylors and promised to send announcement of passage or failure of the wage law. The telegram simply stated: SPRINGFIELD ILL JULY 1, 1961 CDT: LOUISE TAYLOR (wife of Captain Mel Taylor) = CFIARLESTON ILL-JUST PASSED PAY RAISE BILLS FOR FIREMEN AND POLICEMEN 39 TO 12. CONGRATULATIONS. YOUR FRIEND =PAUL GRAHAM-

BOMB SCARES RAMPANT IN OLNEY & CHARLESTON

Students were evacuated from schools in Olney and Charleston following anonymous warnings that bombs had been hidden in the buildings. Both bomb scares were a hoax. The scares were made for East Richland High School (825 students); A U.S. Army demolition team from Granite City investigated the scare and pronounced the building "clear" at 3 P.M. At Charleston, an anonymous caller told Fire Capt. Melvin Taylor Tuesday night that "a bomb will go off in the Jefferson Junior High School at 10 A.M. Wednesday." The building was immediately checked and kept under surveillance Tuesday night. During ganother early morning search yesterday the 430 students were moved to a nearby gymnasium.
